As You Like It
by William Shakespeare
Aug 5-7, 12-14, 19-21

Someone is leaving love poems on the trees, littering the forest of Arden with odes to “my fair Rosalind.” The forest is indeed a strange and mysterious place: full of exiled lords, disguised royalty, lovesick shepherds and melancholy fools. Rosalind has been banished her by her uncle, who years before had banished her father Duke Senior. Disguised as a boy and accompanied by her cousin and close friend Celia and the fool Touchstone, they while away the hours in the peace, simplicity, and serenity of the forest. When the sonnets start appearing on trees they discover Orlando, a young man Rosalind had met only briefly at court but who is now infatuated with her. He too has sought refuge in Arden from a tyrannical older brother, becoming a lord of Duke Senior’s forest court. He does not recognize Rosalind disguised but is determined he will not be cured of his lovesickness. Wise fools, foolish lovers, and a host of compelling and fascinating characters populate the forest realm of Arden, where things are almost never as they seem to be.
As You Like It is one of Shakespeare’s most beloved pastoral comedies. It explores many of his favorite themes, including disguise, role reversal, exile, triumphant return, and romantic complications of all sorts. Full of song, dance, and high spirits, an evening spent in the magical world of As You Like It will prove a truly delightful way to while away a summer evening.
